Open Studio Terms and Conditions – Updated 1/1/2026
These Terms and Conditions govern participation in the Open Studio program at Cool Joyce Studio (“the Studio”). By signing up for or using Open Studio time, you agree to comply with the following terms.
1. Eligibility
- Open Studio is intended for independent ceramic artists who have completed an approved orientation or equivalent experience.
- The Studio reserves the right to deny or revoke Open Studio access at its sole discretion.
2. Orientation & Skill Level
- All participants must complete a mandatory orientation before first use.
- Open Studio is not instructional time. Staff may provide limited guidance related to safety or studio operations, but not formal teaching.
- Participants must be able to work independently and safely.
3. Memberships, Passes & Fees
- Open Studio access is available via monthly subscription as listed on the Studio website or front desk.
- Fees are non-refundable and non-transferable unless otherwise stated.
- Open Studio hours and availability are subject to change.
4. Scheduling & Access
- Open Studio use is limited to posted hours only.
- Advance booking may be required.
- Participants must check in upon arrival and check out when leaving.
- Late arrivals do not extend studio time.
5. Studio Use & Etiquette
- Respect shared space, equipment, and other artists.
- No guests, observers, or children unless explicitly approved.
- Personal items must be stored in designated areas.
- Music must be kept at a reasonable volume (headphones encouraged).
- The Studio is a drug- and alcohol-free environment.
6. Equipment & Tools
- A list of equipment and tools available of the Open Studio program is posted in the pottery work area. Not all equipment is available for use by Open Studio participants. If you are unsure of which pieces of equipment are available for Open Studio, inquire with staff prior to use
- Studio equipment is shared and must be used properly and respectfully.
- Do not adjust, repair, or modify equipment without staff approval.
- Clean equipment immediately after use.
- Personal tools are encouraged; the Studio is not responsible for lost or damaged personal items.
7. Clay, Glazes & Materials
- Only Studio-approved clay bodies may be used.
- Use only glazes provided or explicitly approved by the Studio.
- Mixing personal glazes is not permitted unless authorized.
- Misuse of materials may result in loss of Open Studio privileges.
8. Firings
- All firings are conducted by Studio staff only.
- Firing schedules are determined by the Studio.
- The Studio is not responsible for defects, breakage, glaze results, or kiln-related damage.
- Work left unclaimed beyond 30 days after notification may be discarded.
9. Cleaning Responsibilities
- Participants must clean their work area, tools, wheels, tables, and floors before leaving.
- Improper cleanup may result in cleaning fees or suspension of access.
10. Storage
- Storage space is limited and assigned at the Studio’s discretion.
- Unlabeled or abandoned work may be discarded.
- Long-term storage is not guaranteed.
11. Health & Safety
- Closed-toe shoes are required.
- Follow all posted safety rules and staff instructions.
- Report injuries or unsafe conditions immediately.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment when required.
IMPORTANT WAIVER AND RELEASE OF LIABILITY (WISCONSIN)
PLEASE READ CAREFULLY. THIS SECTION AFFECTS YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS.
By signing this document or participating in Open Studio, you acknowledge that you understand and agree to the following waiver and release of liability under Wisconsin law.
12. Liability & Assumption of Risk (Wisconsin — Plain Language)
- Working in a pottery studio has real risks. These may include cuts, burns, strains, exposure to clay dust or glaze materials, broken work, and damage to personal property.
- By choosing to use the Studio, you understand and accept these risks, even if they are not obvious or expected.
- To the fullest extent allowed under Wisconsin law, you agree that the Studio and its owners, staff, instructors, volunteers, and agents are not responsible for injuries, losses, or damages that happen during Open Studio use.
- You give up the right to make a claim or sue the Studio for injuries or damages caused by the Studio’s ordinary negligence.
- This release does not apply to intentional, reckless, or willful misconduct where Wisconsin law does not allow a release.
- The Studio is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged personal property.
- If your actions cause damage, injury, or legal claims, you agree to cover those costs and protect the Studio from related expenses.
- The Studio is not liable for personal injury, property loss, or damage.
13. Damage & Misuse
- Participants are financially responsible for damage caused by misuse or negligence.
- Repeated violations may result in termination of Open Studio access without refund.
14. Conduct
- Harassment, discrimination, or disruptive behavior will not be tolerated.
- The Studio reserves the right to remove anyone who violates Studio policies.
15. Photography & Promotion
- The Studio may photograph work or activities for promotional purposes unless you opt out in writing.
16. Changes to Terms
- These Terms and Conditions may be updated at any time.
- Continued participation constitutes acceptance of updated terms.
